【Survey】Communication is the key to being successful at a foreign univ.

From our survey we found that many students think it is important to proactively participate in various communities and to not be afraid of relying on people around them.  This survey was conducted to collect the opinions from international students about their campus life.

Beyond a language barrier

We conducted this questionnaire via a Google Form from February 19 to March 6. The survey focuses on respondents’ struggles when starting their campus life, what they found helpful, and advice for new international students. Many of the respondents recommended participating in some club or social activities and attending the welcoming events to gather useful information. Additionally, making foreign friends is an effective way to get used to different accents. Finally, while some respondents said that many Japanese people cannot speak English, respondents generally indicated that students, tutors, and professors are all kind and are willing to help despite any language barrier.

The challenges you may face in Japan

When you study in Japan as an international student, you might feel bewildered both inside and outside the university. According to the survey results, 55 percent of respondents answered that they had difficulty completing the office procedures. Some respondents mentioned to that most documents were written in Japanese, or that most officers speak only Japanese, while others felt that the procedures themselves were complicated and confusing. One opinion suggests that you should be ready to deal with a lot of bureaucracy and that you should finish it as early as possible. Regarding daily life outside the campus, some respondents experienced various difficulties, including registering for a SIM card, daily shopping, and using transportation. If you are not familiar with life in Japan, you can utilize blogs or articles written by people living in Japan.
